Last Tuesday, October 1, Congress had been unable to come to an agreement on government spending legislation, resulting in a shutdown of the U.S. government. The Senate will convene today, Monday, October 7 at 2:00 pm, and following any leader remarks, the Senate will be in a period of morning business (for debate only) until 5:00 pm, with senators permitted to speak for up to 10 minutes each.
At 5:00 pm, the Senate will proceed to Executive Session in order to consider the following:
- Executive Calendar #204 – The nomination of Colin Stirling Bruce to be United States District Judge for the Central District of Illinois; and
- Executive Calendar #205 – The nomination of Sara Lee Ellis to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois.
There will be up to 30 minutes of debate, divided and controlled equally, after which the Senate will vote on confirmation of the nominations. One roll call vote and one voice vote is expected.
Also today, the House will meet at 12:00 pm for morning hour and 2:00 pm for legislative business, with votes being postponed until 6:30 pm. One minute speeches are on the calendar, as is H. J. Res. 77 – the Food and Drug Safety Act, 2014, which will be considered under a closed rule with 40 minutes of debate. Special order speeches are also on the House calendar for Monday.
