Shaheen/Portman Energy Cloture Vote Scheduled for Monday

On Monday, May 12, the Senate will consider a motion to invoke cloture to end debate on S. 2262, the “Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2014,” a comprehensive energy efficiency bill introduced by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Rob Portman (R-OH). As of this writing Senate negotiators have not been able to strike a deal on amendments that would be in order for consideration, potentially killing the bill for a second time this Congress.

This Week’s Hearings

  • Tuesday, May 13: The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing to consider the nomination of Dr. Suzette M. Kimball to serve as the U.S.S Geological Survey’s director, Mr. Estevan R. Lopez to serve as Commissioner of Reclamation, and Dr. Monica C. Regalbuto to serve as the Department of Energy’s assistant secretary for environmental management.
  • Wednesday, May 14: The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will hold a hearing titled, “Nuclear Reactor Decommissioning: Stakeholder Views.”

Secretary Moniz Explains That 2 LNG Export Applications to Receive Final Orders Soon

Last week, Department of Energy Secretary Ernest J. Moniz gave a speech at the G-7 meeting in Rome and expressed the view that two pending applications to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) would receive final environmental approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission “fairly soon.” The Secretary did not describe which project applications are slated for final environmental review.
